Gaur Green City: The society near the garbage dump

Residents of Gaur Green City, Vaibhav Khand, Indirapuram, are fed up. They have continually been complaining of stench from a dumping site that has sprung up in the neighbourhood in the past few months.

The open space next to the upcoming 400kVA power substation on Kala Patthar road has been turned into a dumping site, where waste from nearby societies and shops is being left to rot.

While speaking to City Spidey, Jigyasu Pant, AOA general secretary of Gaur Green City, said, “Residents from the 765 flats in our society are suffering every day, thanks to this illegal dumping of garbage. With the onset of the monsoons, the site has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.”  He added, “We conduct cleanliness and fogging drives in our society, but we can’t control the situation outside it. We have tried to stop garbage collectors from picking garbage up from the society and disposing of it there, but to no avail.”

The situation also underlines the failure of the waste-management system adopted by the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA).

When City Spidey took up the matter with Chakresh Jain, superintending engineer of GDA, he said the area might not come under the authority’s jurisdiction. He also alleged that many societies in Indirapuram had not been paying their maintenance charges, which had led to pending dues to the tune of Rs 20-30 crore. “Instead of clearing the payments, the societies opt for their own garbage-disposal arrangements. They refuse to use the services of GDA, and this may have aggravated the situation,” he said.

However, Jain acknowledged the issue and said he would look into it.
