Mayur Vihar Extension gasps for breath in rotting garbage

Thanks to the lackadaisical approach of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), the garbage left unattended on the roads of East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar Extension has become a constant source of trouble for residents of the area.

There are about 10 apartments in the area, including Samachar Apartments, Lovely Apartments and United India Apartments. The colony, comprising over 50 societies, has been in a filthy state for the past one week. The stench of rotting garbage has made it difficult for residents to even step out of their societies.

With the onset of the monsoons, the situation has turned from bad to worse. Garbage left near a park adjoining United India Apartments has the area stinking to the high heavens. “I often visit the park in the evenings, but it’s so unpleasant now,” complains Charu Das, a senior citizen. “Sometimes, it’s even difficult to cross the road,” added another.

When City Spidey took up the matter with the area’s councillor, Nikki Singh, she said, “The EDMC is facing a shortage of garbage-collecting teams and vehicles.”

Ummed Singh, secretary of United India Apartments, told City Spidey that they have written to the Delhi government and the EDMC to bring the issue to their notice. “We have clicked photos of the dumped garbage and sent them to the authorities — but the problem persists.”
